The car carrying Sandra Dee to New York's amusement park, Freedomland, jolted over torn up pavement and swayed precariously. The lovely young girl in the back seat scarcely noticed the discomfort. She was going to meet her husband--a man she had declared she no longer wanted. It was to be a public meeting. How would he greet her? With coldness...With contempt? Would they be strangers to each other? Would he only be interested in seeing his son and treat his son's mother simply as a messenger?
The car stopped finally inside the huge amusement park and Sandra gathered Dodd to her and stepped out into the crowd. There was Bobby!
She could feel the heavy pounding of her heart as he came toward her. And then--relief flooded through her as he held out his arms. Stepping into them and raising her face for his kiss was like coming home again. They smiled at each other after that kiss--a smile that was like a promise. It told them that there was still a chance for their love.
Then a flash bulb popped. Bobby turned from her in a flash of anger. He walked toward the photographer and she saw them arguing. Finally, the man gave Bobby what he wanted--the roll of film and she heard Bobby say, "I'm--sorry. I don't allow pictures of my family!"
The same Bobby. He hadn't changed. He wouldn't change. Sandra had to smile to herself because it was all so familiar.
But she was afraid, too. This very thing had caused so many fights between them. Was this Bobby's way of telling her that he didn t want to try again? That it was still all over? No, it couldn't be. She knew what his kiss meant.
The incident passed quickly and the day was full of laughter for the three of them. Dodd loved the rides and laughed and laughed. They showed him all the wonderful new sights and Sandy and Bobby felt the tension of the months of separation ebbing as they behaved, naturally, and like a family again.
The problems were still there -- they both knew it. But they were together again and that was all that mattered. Maybe it would be all that ever mattered.
